Hawks Start World Series 2-0

LETHBRIDGE, AB---The Edmonton Collegiate Hawks are one of two unbeaten teams after two days of play at the 2026 Canadian College World Series. The Hawks won their second straight game on Friday (May 22), downing the University of Calgary Dinos 11-8. This follows a 13-4 decision over the University of Fraser Valley Cascades on Thursday (May 21). Against Calgary, the Hawks found themselves down 2-0 after a half inning but scored four times in the bottom the first. Thanks in part to a three run homer from First Team Canadian Collegiate Baseball Conference all-star #55 Caedyn Colford. It was Colford’s second straight game with a home run. #1 Kolby Smith added a solo homer in the first. Both came off Dinos losing pitcher #7 Riley Burns. Burns tossed that first inning surrendering six runs on nine hits and striking out one. The Collegiate Hawks added two runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 6-2. The Dinos rebounded with three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 6-5. But Edmonton enlarged their lead to 7-5 with two runs in their half of the fourth. # 16 Jace Daku smacked a solo shot in the fifth. The teams exchanged runs in the sixth inning before Calgary added two in the seventh. The Collegiate Hawks added a single run in the eighth. For the second straight contest, Colford led Edmonton offensively. In this game he went 3 for 4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. Smith was 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Daku was 3 for 5 with three runs scored and an RBI. #23 Brayden Morris went 2 for 4 at the dish with two RBI. # 18 Simon Virostek was 3 for 6 with two runs scored and an RBI. #40 Matty Schnieder, the second of four Edmonton pitchers got the win. He tossed three innings. Schnieder gave up five hits, three runs, and walked three. #12 Riley Starko picked up the save. He went two innings, giving up no runs, three hits, walking one and striking out two. The Collegiate Hawks will tangle with the host Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs in a battle of two unbeaten teams. The Dawgs earned a bye on Friday. The winner of Saturday’s 1 PM MDT contest will get a bye to Sunday’s final. Other scores from Friday had Fraser Valley double up Vancouver Island University 20-10. That eliminated VIU from further play. Okanagan College dumped Fraser Valley 8-3. Saturday games go at 10 AM and 430 PM MDT. The first game of the day has Okanagan College tangling with Calgary. The 430 PM contest has the winner of the 10 AM game playing the loser of the PBA/Edmonton contest. All action can be and can be watched on www.mapleleafbaseball.tv.
